Oklahoma Prisons Recognize Illegal Cellphones as Problem

NewsOK.com's Andrew Knittle reported on Monday about the rising problem of contraband cellphones in Oklahoma correctional facilities.

The state has recognized that over the last decade, the issue has become increasingly problematic, with the number of confiscated phones rising dramatically. In 2012 alone, over 1,800 phones were snatched from inmates, versus around 1,000 units in 2010 and just under 1,400 in 2011.

The draw to the smuggled phones stems from the desire of inmates to have unmonitored conversations and access to online access, like social networking. Currently, inmate phone calls are conducted through means of monitored pay phone and calling cards.  The illegal cellphones and smartphones have become akin to other prison contraband, like tobacco and drugs.

House of Commons Allows for Mobile Jamming in UK Prisons

The Daily Express reported yesterday that in the UK, the Westminster and Holyrod prisons are implementing technology that will allow officials to combat contraband mobile phones that are being used by prisoners to conduct organized crime.

Backed by the Scottish Government, the new technology will block cell signal inside the prisons.  There have been problems with cellphone jamming technology in prisons that are located in highly-populated areas, as blocking the cell signal of inmates also blocks the cell signal of the surrounding area as well.

Mobile phone jamming has been tested in England, but has not been tried in Scottish prisons.

The House of Commons passed a bill in October that allows prison authorities to detect, manage, and jam mobile phone signals in prisons and secure training centers.

CJAM works internationally with prisons and other correctional facilities to safely implement mobile phone detection, control and jamming solutions.  Visit CJAM.com to learn more about our services and to schedule a demonstration or site audit.

South Africa Declares Cellphone Jamming Illegal

ICASA, the communications authority of South Africa, declared today that the jamming of cellular signal - both privately and publicly - is illegal.

Click here to read the article.

The agency has established that there is 'no legitimate use' for 'mobile telephone blocking devices'.

The debate surrounding cellphone jammers is ongoing.  Jammers can be utilized by both criminals and law enforcement to control communication.

CellAntenna Corporation promotes the use of jamming only for law enforcement and first responders when in the overall safety interest of the general public. While cellphone jammers can be used to prevent security leaks, they are also capable of not only knocking out regular communication, but emergency communication as well.

California to Implement Managed Access in Prisons

The Contra Costa Times has reported that the Avenal State Prison in Central California will be installing managed access technology in an attempt to block illegal cellphone calls by inmates.

There were over 10,000 contraband cellphones confiscated in 2011, a number that continues to rise year after year.  Inmates are now using the illegal cellphones to further their criminal activity.

The expectation is for the managed access technology to be installed throughout California's prison system over the next three years.

CJAM works with prisons worldwide to implement cellphone detection, control and jamming solutions to combat contraband cellphones.  We have successfully deployed Managed Access Systems in prisons in the United States, and now also offer auditing services to test the efficiency of existing systems.

Contraband Cellphones Found in Enid, OK Facility

In Enid, Oklahoma, it was reported that three female jail administrators were charged with felonies, including bringing contraband cellphones into the prison where they were being housed.  Each of the three also admitted to having relationships with inmates.

The cellphones were found when a search was conducted on the 7th of September.

The guards were undetected in their criminal activity because they cooperated with one another, corrupting cameras inside the facility and flashing lights as warnings.

Illegal cellphones in prisons has become an increasing problem in the correctional industry.  CJAM.com works with prisons worldwide to deliver solutions that detect, control and block/jam contraband cellphones in jails.
